if you mean what is or what is the function of the bench........he is generally the managers "assistant" in the dugout. someone the manager can turn to for discussion of certain strategical decisions, usually the bench coach will be the person who will notify players on the bench when they are about to be used as pinch hitters or defensive replacements. typically in those cases that a manager might be ejected from a game, it is the bench coach who will run the team for the rest of the game.
