My daughter started taking in "solids" around 6 months. It varies with each child.
Babies have a protective reflex that causes them to "spit out" anything solid from their mouths (they push it out with their tongue). It is to help keep them from choaking. When that reflex is "gone", they are ready.
If your infant is not satisfied with just breast milk/formula, speak to your doctor and find out what to do. What my doc had me do was mix some infant cereal in with formula in a bottle and feed it to her that way. This was done only twice a day, but it was enough for her to be satisfied.

The doctors tell you to wait until they are at least 6 months old. But if your baby is hungry and not being satisfied on breast milk or formula then it is time to start solids. You know your baby best! Just remember...start with rice cereal (it is the easiest to digest) mixed with formula or breast milk. This will help satisfy for a couple of months. If your little one gets constipated...add a tiny bit of white caro syrup to the cereal...this will help! When your baby is ready for baby food start with the yellow and orange veggies (carrots, squash etc) or start with bland fruits. (peaches, applesauce etc) Feed each one for 3 days before introducing a new one. If a baby is going to have a reaction it will be within the 3 days. Good luck.

This is a question that should be addressed by your doctor, but in general, when they start paying attention to others eating there are things they might try. Today they are withholding many things until after a year to avoid allergy, these include: milk, orange juice, nuts, eggs. They sometimes start with the introduction of apple or cherry juice to introduce flavors other than formula or breast milk. Mashed potatoes are easily digestable, babies can chew on teething biscuits, they can gum an apple piece, mashed carrots, bananas, other soft fruits and vegetables.

You can safely introduce solids any time between 4m - 6m of age. Start with a very bland pablum type (rice cereal) is easiest to digest. Over the next several days, watch for tolerance and slowly introduce a single vegetable such as squash or peas. Within the next 2 months your little one will be eating most varieties of pablum and several fruits and vegetables. Be mindful of changes in skin (allergies) and stools as well as any vomiting. This could indicate another problem,

We were told six months by our pediatrician. The American Academy of Pediatricians recommends 4 to 6 months with six months being better if you are breastfeeding. We were exclusively breastfeeding and opted for 6 months. If you feed your baby food too early, your milk output may decrease and you are replacing milk, the best food for your baby, with something nutritionally inferior for them at that age. A baby's digestive system is too immature for solid foods before four months, throat muscles are not not developed enough to swallow, and they lack the ability to turn their heads to signal they are full until 4 to 5 months. With a bottle or breast, they simply stop sucking. After six months, babies begin to need some solid foods for their nutrients and eating helps babies developmentally. Delaying solids beyond 9 months may cause baby to refuse textured foods.

My pediatrician recommeded that I start INTRODUCING solids at about 4 months. I want to tell you not to go crazy on the variety of foods you give the baby, they should only have meats chicken and turkey at about 6 months and no others til about 11 months, I personally had a VERY BAD experience because I wasnt aware of that, my daughter had a really hard time digesting veal and beef. She had very painful bowel movements. Just start off with baby cereals, fruits and veggies til the baby is about 6 or 7 months then introduce meats.. you will know what schedule to have him/her on, your the mommy!! =0)
P.S. Let your baby play with the food all he wants!!! Its great for them to learn textures and temperatures AND it promotes self feeding!!! Good luck!

infants need nothing but breastmilk or fomula for 6 months, they even say a year. But you will know when your baby is ready. Around four months both of my boys started really watching us eating.Even grabbing out for the spoon or fork. Single rice cereal mixed with breastmilk or formual is the way to start. I just started them out with a couple of spoonfuls very thin. It can cause them to get gas though so becareful and have some gas drops handy. Good Luck.

Alot depends on your baby. The thrust reflex disappears at different ages. (Thrust reflex is your babies built in choking "alarm".) Here is a test to see if your baby may be ready, take some infant cereal, thickened (think soup) with formula. Put some on your index finger and put on babies tongue. Does baby spit it back out or is he able to move it to the back of his mouth? Good luck.
FYI: Both mine started with cereal when they could sit up and hold their heads upright. If I remember correctly around 5 months. The book What To Expect The First Year is a good resource! Check it out!
