Go for one the snowboarding games like SSX or the dance games or Guitar Hero- those are good for people that aren't already into shooting aliens or playing pro football.
I think the latest games out are Mortal Kombat/Armageddon, Reservoir Dogs and Justice League Heroes, if you just wanna see what's new.

It all pretty much depends on your tastes. If you like reading (as a sort of hobby) fantasy and sci-fi mostly, you might want to go towards role-playing games. If you're more of an active, do before think type of person, first-person shooters or fighting games might be for you. And then there are the platforming games which can be pretty much taken up by anyone.
And don't just limit yourself to new releases, older games are sometimes better suited for just picking up and playing. (and a lot cheaper in most cases)
So just do some research, find your style, and move on from there.

If you've never played video games I would look through gaming magazines and try to find something that interests you and they'll show you the new upcoming games and show you the ones that are out and they rate them. Or you can go to gaming websites and let you know everything. An example http://www.ign.com/
And it also helps to know what kind of system you would be playing on since all video games vary and not all of them are available on the same system.

For a beginner like yourself, you should start with platform games. Like Crash Bandicoot on PlayStation, Super Mario Bros. on Nintendo, or Sonic the Hedgehog on the XBox, PS2, and Nintendo GameCube. And just build yourself up. That's what I did. Or if you want jump into action, play God of War on PS2, or Halo on Xbox. Don't worry about reading the manual to learn how to play the game. It tells what do when you start the game. Most games like that, or even have tutorial mode.
