Hi,
I'm buying a new laptop, and can't decide between Core Duo or Core 2 Duo.
I use my laptop for the basic stuff nothing too fancy, so I'm not sure which one to get.
Should I get the Core 2 Duo just because its new and Core Duo will be obsolete? Or is it something I just don't need?
Thanks a lot for your help!!!

Whenever you buy a computer there are many choices to make including processor speed, memory, video card, video display, software, wireless, bluetooth, and peripherals. I would suggest that you find a balance between these elements and not just focus on the processor. If you just do the basic stuff the Core Duo should more than suffice for your needs. I would save my money or spend it on other elements. When buying a laptop it is difficult to impossible to upgrade your video card or display. You will also want at least 1 gig of RAM memory.

Core Duo will probably suit your needs, but do remember that one of the big features of the Core 2 Duo is its energy efficiency, so if getting good battery life is important to you, I would go with the Core 2 Duo. Other than that, the Core Duo is fine for you.

I have a new Macbook Black 13.3 and it absolutely rocks the house out. This machine is compact and with the Core Duo (2??? who knows,) it is screaming fast. Combine that processing power with the Mac OS/X and you have an extreme machine. Blows an XP or vista box AWAY. PLUS, you can reinstall Mac OS/X as many times as you like without getting reamed in the new Vista licensing where you are only allowed to reinstall once, for a total of TWO installations per license. Talk about a RIP OFF. Windows wants everyone to run from them. Besides, when is the last time anyone owned a machine that didn't require a reinstallation of the Windows OS? What a hoot.

Core 2 Duo is faster, but I've heard the performance boost isn't very significant.

Why don't you skip Intel and buy an AMD machine.

The reason Macs are screaming fast with Intel is that the code is different. Apple code is UNIX based, that means the processor isn't dealing with layers of code like Microsoft DOS based software.

Get an AMD processor in your machine, it runs 64 bit natively, that means you are capable of running other open source software when it matures in the near future.

And when vista comes out, you won't need to do anything but install the software.

Intel is so far behind the curve it's ridiculous. They have dual core processors because AMD out patented them on 64 bit.

Look up the failure of Itanium

I would get Core 2 Duo... go big or go home. When it comes to major purchases like this it's always better to get something that will last and be happy, rather than replacing it too soon.
