and I can't get rid of them. How long should it take and what should I do with my real nails once they are off?

You need a couple of hours to properly get acrylic nails off without damaging your natural nail. I would recommend going to a salon to get it done. If you can't, try this.

Put the acetone in a glass bowl(it will eat through plastic). Put one hand in the bowl with the nails submerged. After 10 min or so, scrape the loosened acrylic off with an orange wood stick( a Popsicle stick may work as well). Put the nails back in the acetone and do it all over again.
If it hurts STOP. You may be pulling your natural nail off a little. Not only does this hurt, but it is really ugly. It can also lead to an infection.
Continue until all the acrylic is off the nails. Then proceed with a manicure. File the nail short(it will break if you don't). Apply a strengthening polish and make sure apply lotion every day. This will keep the nail and surrounding area healthy and growing.

The time varies, try 1-2 minutes at first and if that isnt long enough then try it for a few more minutes and they should come off. You should file your nails and buff them and also put clear coat on them.
