We put our Red eared slider in a man made pond we built for him in our back yard, the water was sort of cold but he seemed to enjoy it. We knew that they would fall asleep in cold temperatures i the winter but we need to know how long they sleep during hibernation and how long they can hold there breath while doing so.

Sliders become inactive in October, when temperatures drop below 50° F (10° C). Individuals often hibernate underwater, but have also been found under banks and hollow stumps. Sliders do not hibernate in groups, unless forced to because of the lack of a suitable hibernation area. Hibernation is not uninterrupted, during warm spells in January and February, they become active and surface to bask. However, when the temperature begins to drop again, they quickly return to their hibernation area. Sliders emerge for good in early March or late April

If it is hibernating in the mud at the bottom of the pond, it will not need to breath any air, instead it will get the small amount of oxygen it needs from the water itself.

Its a little early for hibernation, though, in most of the range. If they are not hibernating, they can hold their breath for an hour in some conditions, especially if it is cold.

RES will hibernate till it gets warm again....BUT if they do not have enough fat on them they may not make it. when it's cold they stop eating as much preparing for hibernation.....If the turtle is small you may want to keep it in doors to help it gain the fat needed for hibernation. Also the turtle will need mud to burrow under during the cold season to help with insolation.....so if the pond does not have a heater you may want to add mud to the bottom.

my slider will stay the whole winter underwater and it comes back just fine.
P.S during hibernation turtles don't need to breathe but be sure that the pond is deep enough that it won't even come close to freezing

I'm not sure how long they can hold their breath but I would NOT reccomend leaving him out in the pond during the winter. Reptiles are sluggish when they get cold and he could easily be injured or killed when he's not alert. Plus the temperatures alone could kill him.

they can go into a dormant state and can stay submerged all winter, go to one of the websites to read up on hibernation or get a good book
I hope you didn't just put him out in the cold pond, I hope he had all summer to acclimate
