It only happens when connected to the Internet. I'd be grateful for any info on what's going on here. Thanks.

There is nothing wrong with your connection or pc.
check your RAM if it is 64 then increse RAM as you are using windows xp.
clicking sounds are common
for your shutting down the computer kindly active power management services which xp default gives.
click on RUN
write there msconfig
GENERAL: normal startup
Services: Hide all microsoft services and look at power manager active that option
Reboot!

This is a common problem with Windows XP without a service pack. It always shuts down the computer when you dial-up to the internet. Install windows xp service pack 2. Your problem will be solved. But I recommend, you back up your essential data and format the C: drive and install a Windows XP fresh copy with integrated Service pack 2. there must b something wrong with ur pc...
ask ur dealer... i think it was hacked o maybe just contain virus in your pc....
