First.. don't punish him with the crate. The crate is usually used in a positive way to potty train. =) Try catching him in the act and telling him firmly, "No! Bad dog." and take him out where you would like him to relieve himself, immediately. Afterwards, I would routinly take the dog outside, to the designated potty area, to use the bathroom every hour - even if it doesn't look like he has to go - and tell him "Go pee" or whatever you use. When he pee's, give positive reinforcement - "Good boy" or a treat. Slowly work your way up. Once he's mastered pottying every hour, try every two hours instead. Then three hours and so forth. Try establishing a pattern. Every time you take the dog out of the crate, take him outside to potty, play with him, feed him etc. then put him in the crate when it's time. Note: The dog will have some accidents. Just keep up with the pattern and he should learn to hold it until outside. But remember, don't leave him in the crate for extended amounts of time. The longer the dog is confined, the more likely he'll have an accident. Also, clean the accident up ASAP - with something that will eliminate the odor so he won't be tempted to use that area again.
