If you believe what you read, then he left because the manager (Sir Alex Ferguson) thought Beckham put himself (via personal appearances and such) before the team;

If you delve a little further, you'll notice that SAF has a way of creating drama with his star players (see Jaap Stam, Roy Keane, and Ruud Van Nistelrooy among others) right before selling them off-- how much did Beckham transfer to Real for? I personally believe that SAF premeditates these situations so that it is less emotionally painful to transfer these players: the business side of him understands that he must sell these players in their prime to achieve maximum financial transfer value, but he needs to detach himself (on a personal level) from players he was once so close to-- Keane was his on-field voice as skipper for a number of years, whereas he had blooded Becks (from when he signed for ManU) since his early teen years.

On the financial side, I'm sure Adidas had alot to do with him tranferring to Real Madrid: at the time, the former England captain was the boot manufacturer's marquee (sponsored) player, and Real was their marquee club (who they provided kits for)-- a match made for selling shirts!

I hold a a lot against his wife. In the months before he left, there were rumors she hated SAF and wanted him to go. It didn't help that she was seen house shopping in places like Milan and Madrid either.

But really I think Real Madrid just have a great drawing power. They are one of the greatest clubs in the world and have a lot of silverware. When Beckham Joined them they were tops in Spain and Europe, as Barcelona now is. So having won the EPL, FA cup, CL in Manchester, perhaps he just wanted a new challenge?

I guess it may have been many things but I think his wife had a good share of things.

He left becaue he wanted a change. It is natural, he was at Man U, since he was a kid.
