No, no, no. Spain TRIED to conquer the New World... all it ended up with was a beat-down by a people now known as "Mexicans" that are known for the world's worst economy (or at least in this Hemisphere), spicy food, and border trouble.

Now, would I really want to go around saying "Spain conquered the New World" after that??? Didn't think so.

There are many reasons.
Financial. The New World was discovered by explorers trying to find a western route to India for trade. Once there they found gold, silver and new trade goods to exploit.

Religion. Spain considered itself the protector of Catholicism. It felt a duty to convert or kill the pagans of the New World, and stop Protestant influences in the same region

Prestige. As an Absolute Monarchy the status of Spain was the status of its king. Spain was compelled to prove its superiority to other European nations, in particular Portugal whose explorations and colonies were impressive for a weaker nation..

That question could only be asked by some one steeped in the relativism that is so prevalent in academia today. Tell your teacher that he/she is a twit. Spain was an empire then and empires keep adding territory as long as they remain empires. Some may say religious conversion reasons were in play, but that sounds now, as it probably did then, a rationalization for what is the naked lust to conquer.

PS The correct question is how they conquered.

The spanish sent out Columbus to conquer the new world because they had enough money/gold to build caravals to send out. The italiens refused to send columbus on his journey but the spanish under Ferdinand and isabella had enough to support columbus on his journey
