The USSR's Buran shuttle was a wonderful achievement. It's first and only flight was unmanned and fully automated. It made two orbits of Earth and landed in a heavy crosswind under computer control. I remember watching the landing on television. It was awesome.
Unfortunately, the Soviet economy was in the toilet at that time. There was no money left to pursue the program, and the Buran shuttle and the Energia booster never flew again.
In some ways, Buran was very similar to the American shuttle. The shape, control surfaces, and thermal protection system were very similar. However, Buran did not carry engines like the American shuttle. The Energia booster was extremely powerful and hurled Buran into orbit just fine. Buran's orbital manuvering engines were hypergolic just like those on the American shuttle. Lastly, because of the power of the Energia, Buran was capable of carrying more weight into orbit.
All the facts, you'd ever want about Buran and Energia are available at astronautix.com.

The Space Shuttle of Soviet Union was a little bit bigger and more powerful than those of USA's. It had made one maiden trip to space and there was no more flight after that. I had worked for Rockwell
International in the 80's for US Space Shuttle engineering. It was 1985,they launched the first flight. I think it was 1985 because in 1986, the major news was the Space Shuttle Challenger's explosion.Buran means snow storm.
Was it because political instability or technical problems,or funding problems that
made them unsuccessful? I am not so sure.
The Space Shuttle Buran was launched at November 15,1988(correction).

There isn't no space war between the US and Russia, To have a space war both sides would need to be able to fund it, And both the USA and Russia are hurting right now economically speaking . God bless.

The Russians (Soviets then) made their version of a space shuttle in the 80's. The craft's name was Buran. It made one unmanned flight and returned to earth. I'm not positive, but I think it suffered severe structural damage during re-entry that made it unsuitable for reuse.

Russia has been in space longer than anyone. The first satellite launched was Russian (Sputnik), and so was the first man in space. The US just made it to the Moon first.
I don't know much about their space program other than that, though. But I'm pretty sure they developed the technology themselves.
