We have our family's annual Christmas movie festival a couple of Saturdays before Christmas. We'll send out invites to a few really close family and friends, fire up the popcorn popper, and gather as many holiday movies as we can. We usually have one TV dedicated to Christmas cartoons for the kids (Barney, Rugrats, etc.) and the big TV in the living room for the adults who'd rather be watching It's a Wonderful Life or A Christmas Carol. Of course, by the end of the day we're all gathered on the couch watching Rudolph, but we're all a bunch of overgrown kids when it comes to the holidays anyway. All in all, it's a stress-free way to gather with loved ones, and that really makes the season even more special!

When our girls were little, we'd go out to a place where you cut your own tree. We'd also go to a inner city shelter and help with the meal for homeless people in the area.
We'd read the Christmas story from the book of Luke. And always go to the candlelight service Christmas Eve. Now we're waiting for the same things with grandkids.

If you are going to start a family tradition start one that you will be able to keep for years and years to come. It doesn't have to be something elaborate or big. When my daughters were two and four I sewed them and their dolls pajamas for Christmas. They were allowed to wear this on Christmas Eve after their baths. Over the years I have sewn many a pajama for them. The years that I was too busy to sew, I would buy them one. One year they surprised me with new pajamas for Christmas Eve and they still do it to this day. They are now in their twenties and either I buy them a new pajama for Christmas Eve or sew one for them. My youngest one has already picked out the material for her pajamas this year. So start a tradition that they will be able to carry on in years to come.

we have a special tomato soup we make that everyone LOVES and we never make all year. while it cooks we go to evening church. then we follow that with fondu steak, shrimp and fruit with chocolate. then we have to wait until dinner is all cleaned up and we open presents, someone is picked to play santa and hands out presents one by one taking turns. we make a big mess with the wrapping paper all over the living room. we also leave the christmas story on tv all day. and play a certain cd of christmas music while opening presents. then we clean up and santa comes in the morning with something little, but special. and we all have the same stockings every year too, and they get a little candy and sometimes a small present. everybody wraps their own presents too, and you can usually tell who it's from just by wrap job..heheh. and my mom makes everyone their favorite cookies too. so there's always fudge, sugar cookies, snicker doodles, and then whatever she feels like that year (the rest of us always want the same). we all decorate the sugar cookies together too. we also like to make hot drinks and get in the car and drive around and look at christmas lights a couple times a year. when i was little my mom made a green felt strip with 24 red strings going down it and hung it on the wall, and on every string was a silver hershey kiss. so everynight we got to untie one kiss before bed. that was soooo great when i was young!

My daughter is 17 now, but when she was in daycare, we used to take a birthday cake for Jesus every year on the last day before they closed for Christmas. Her whole class would sing "Happy Birthday" to Him. Our other tradition she STILL does, is she gets to buy one new ornament every year to put on the tree. Sometimes we cheat and let her get two.

Read about the birth of Jesus together (Matt 1:18-25). It's the real reason for the season.
