A few short questions:
1) why do women wear foundation, i.e. what exactly does it do?
2) How do I go about picking a foundation? I have very sensitive skin--it gets oily very easily but it also is prone to getting very dry. Also, what tone foundation should I use and is it better to use a powder or a liquid?
Thanks in advance.

First, don't use a powder if you are prone to dry skin. If you have any flakes they will show up. Even if you can't see the flakes, the powder will magnify them.

Next, go to a department store. Clinique has some very good foundations and they are cheaper than Lancome, Estee Lauder, etc. It's easier to pick a foundation, because they will try several colors on you and if it doesn't look right, you have nothing to return.

Third, if you have oily skin, don't use a moisturizer except on dry areas.

1) foundation is used to even out skin tone. i.e. it takes away any blotches, uneven tones, redness
2) I would not go with a liquid foundation for you. It sounds like you need a mineral makeup.

Great lines are: Bare Minerals, Jane Iredell, Bare Escentuals
Go Try These On. They are only found in makeup boutiques, Salons or department stores. Apply a small amount to the jawbone and then go out in the sun with a mirror. See if the color matches. If you can't see it, its the right one.

Have fun and talk to the pros.

1. foundation is used to help us even out our skin tone.
2. you want a foundation that matches your skin as closely as possible. don't test it on your hand. it's better to test it on your neck. if you have sensitive skin, you will need to look for a formula designed for sensitive skin. i have recently tried the mineral powder foundation by neutrogena. i like the results. it isn't heavy, my skin still feels like it can breathe and it matches my skin very well.
