The force of impact to passengers in a vehicle has been significantly reduced by collapsible steering columns, strategic padding, air bags and crush zones in the vehicle itself. For every action, there is an opposite and equal reaction - and technology has significantly spread this reaction to the vehicle and, hence, less of the impact force is applied to the occupants. The forces remain the same, but the vehicle is now taking the bulk of the force and transmitting less of it to the occupants.

Sorry, I misread your question - I didn't see the word, "tire."
Radial tires are the key here - soft side walls allow the full width of the tread to stay in contact with road when braking or cornering the vehicle. This maximizes the friction and rolling resistance between the tire and the road and greatly improves the handling and safety of the vehicle. The vehicles centripetal and kinetic energy can be controlled much more effectively.

run flats are awesome and prevent for an ordinary tire to go flat in the middle of the road.
