Sorry Daniel-san, I disagree completely w/ you...
"when the Japanese can build a car without having to account for the extra 1500 average dollars that domestic manufacterers have to pay for their RETIRED employees' benefits that's 1500 dollars they can't put into the quality of my car. Tell me that's not an indicator for the success of Toyota."
I've heard the number is more like $2,000, and where you see this as a reason to avoid american cars, I see it as paying our bills. It is less an indicator of Toyota's success as it is about the cost of the american dream. Yes, GM, Ford, and Chrysler made some business decisions to offset costs from the 70 & 80s until today. They are paying the price, for sure. But GM still invests more into development and research than Toyota does.
Interestingly, Bob Lutz said recently (paraphrasing what I read in Autoweek last night)) that the flagship of GM is the Hummer, and the flagship of Toyota is the Prius. It's not fair. GM sells lots of cars that get great gas mileage, they sell hybrids, etc. Toyota's Full size pickups and SUVs don't get the fuel mileage that GM's do. Yet, Toyota gets the rep as the tech and efficiency leader.
"As far as the G6 vs. the Grand Am? Your chances are not good with the Grand Am. Plagued with consistent problems and dreadfully outdated styling I would stear away from the Grand Am. Want reliability from a Pontiac? Buy a Vibe GT - equipped with the Toyota Celica GTS's 1.8 L v4 (also in the upgraded Matrix and Corolla) it has a great track record and plenty of power. "
The Grand Am was a great car, especially the last few model years. Pontiac sold millions of them. Its styling is outdated, because IT IS AN OLDER CAR. Duh!
"If you can afford a G6, it's not a terrible vehicle. Does it best the Accord or Camry, or even the Mazda 6/Ford Fusion? I don't think so. You can probably get a good price on a Fusion - a better vehicle for it's price. Good luck!"
It may not beat those cars, but those cars don't beat the G6, either. So maybe the X factor here is warranty, advantage Pontiac. 5 year / 100,000 mile powertrain? Can't be matched by Toyota or Honda.
Now, to answer the original question: You can get the G6 for $17,645. It is the 1SV value leader with 4 cyl, A/C, power windows & locks, cloth seats, AM/FM/CD, etc. Very nice car for the money. For 23,000, you can get the V6 w/ panoramic roof and loaded. Do I think it's worth it? My answer is it doesn't matter what I think - my needs are different than yours. You need to decide which features you need and what you can afford.
Now, the question of buying new vs used - there are lots of varying opinions here. Buying new is a horrible investment. You're going to lose money. But, most people don't see a new car purchase as an investment. For them it comes down to other things, like warranty coverage, style, etc.
I have some pointers for you, things you should think about. Most lenders base their rates and terms on the credit of the applicant and the year/ mileage of the vehicle. It will be hard to get a good rate on a 2000 Grand Am, especially one with more than 80,000 miles. It will be almost impossible to get a longer term (48-60mo). So you wind up with a higher payment for a shorter period of time, but then you have to deal with repairs yourself. It's a balance, see?

I had a 2002 pontiac grand am gt 4dr. It was my first car when i was 18 in 2003. I traded it in for a 2006 pontiac Solstice in december of last year and got about $9,500 for it. I have a 2006 G6 GTP 2dr coupe right now, i've had it for about 5-6 months now and it's awsome! It's fully loaded, has every option there is. I paid about $28,650. Was it worth it? I would say yes. Just depends on what model you go with ( i like the gtp....more horsepower!!) But it all depends on your own personal needs.

Pontiac G6 is good. I like pontiacs, I will never buy a ford again. But I will keep buying pontiac. You might be able to find a older G6 for a little less. 2005 is the first year for those.

The G6 is a next generation Pontiac.
Every bit as good and long lasting as ANY import brand.
I would go for the new one, or ask the dealer for a program car.
There are many used G6s available.

i would definitely go with the g6. it is much more stylish and is great if u want to stand out. the grand am was a very old car that needed to be overhauled and it was a good thing to get rid of it. if u want it used, go to autotrader.com. they are great. and no, they dont fall apart after a few years, i have a 94 bonneville and it runs awesome!
