They are a myth, but probably one that is based by a disease called porphyria. The disease disrupts the production of hemaglobine. People with extreme cases of this disease can be very sensitive to sunlight, causing them to avoid sunlight. Porphyria sufferers sometimes blood, or sometimes blood consumption eases the symptoms of porphyria.

I know historically, they've been myths in cultures for thousands of years, world wide. Seems like humans must have some little seed in our subconscious that raises these little critters out of our imagination.

Television and the movies have played them up,big
time, people 'don't' turn into bats, they are a legend
and folklore, true, they can be scary, think about
the Easter bunny and the pretty eggs and candy, and
say your prayers, concentrate on 'light' and not dark-
ness.
