If you are talking about DVD's Most anamorphic DVD's will allow you to zoom in on the picture making it appear as full screen. Some newer TV's and DVD players will have controls for this
(zoom, theater/cinema mode etc.) If the DVD is non anamorphic ( older DVD's in letterbox editions) you can't do anything to them without seriously distorting the picture where zooming in makes it hard to even see what the puicture is. If your TV is a standard 4:3 TV, change your setup on your dvd player from 4:3 to 16:9 television and it will, in most cases "zoom" your picture in, if the letterbox image is indeed anamorhic. If its not, the picture will not change at all. You may have to play with the setup and display modes as differnt DVD players do differnt things. Some wont change the appearance of the picture at all, regardless of whether or not the image is anamorphic or not. Keep in mind that here are different widescreen modes and 16:9 only applies to those that are tranferred from the 1.85:1 ratio ( Back to the Future, Early James Bond films) Films in 2.35:1 (aka scope) will still have black bars at the top and bottom on most TV's, the correct ratio for viewing those is closer to 16:10, but those TV's aren't available in the U.S. becuase most 16:9 images would appear distorted on those screens.
