the strange thing is when I call the number back it says this number is no longer in service please check the number and try again

It's probably as a result of caller id spoofing, where somebody buys a service to transmit a different telephone number hoping you'll pick up.

If the number is showing up, you can call your provider and request the number to be blocked. I have down that to a lot of numbers that call and appear rude.

They're just gathering info... like if the # is in use, when you answer it and when you don't answer it (ie, best time for telemarketers to call you back), etc...
