I have a staff member who I worked with at a prior Company where I was her manager. I recruited her to come with me when I changed jobs. She is technically good in one area of her job but she has an anger management problem. Because of this, she has had numerous personal problems (including three events involving police - one being an arrest and one requiring her to be detained by police) that have created issues with her arriving to work on time and has resulted in her missing many days from work. In addition, she resist authority and wears overly revealing clothing. She has been insolate with me on several occasions. I want to "manage" her out of the Company - send the message that she is no longer needed at the Company and that she should start looking for another job. What suggestions do you have for m e to get rid of her without outright firing her? Even though New York is an at-will state, in order to fire someone there must be cause so this is the best approach.

Either start a "Paper Trail" on her transgressions, so that when she is fired, you have substantial proof of why, or inform her that unfortunately her hjob was "abolished". Give her a severance, a party, a hearty handshake, and a fond farewell.

ny, is like florida where im from, an at will state, what do you owe this person. if nothing, then having the police there three times for her, is enough right there. say that it is affecting other employees because they see her being stupid and nothing happens. its not fair to them are you, or company. ny is a big place, lots of jobs. shes got to know at will means that you dont even have to give her a reason. good luck you will figure it out.

Sounds to me like you have plenty of cause already, but because you're her friend you didn't write her up for any of it. If you're a manager, then manage her. When she violates company policy, write her up. Late? Write up. Skimpy clothes? Write up. Insubordinate? Write up. She'll either straighten up or quit. Either way you win. If you don't do anything, you're a$$ is the one out the door.
