NO, it won't be able to. Below is the official statement from IGN's Nintendo Wii FAQ.

Q: Does Wii play DVD movies?

A: No. Initially, Nintendo announced that Wii would, by way of a "self-contained" add-on, be able to play DVD movies. However, the company has since reneged on the promise. According to company executives, the need for a DVD-movie player is unnecessary in a current market where everybody already owns a DVD player. The Big N chose to nix the feature both because it was redundant and to cut down on the system's manufacturing costs.

I just recently heard that Wii is not dvd compatible. Which means there games are not on dvd-rom either. Nintendo said that it was going to be dvd compatible at first, but later on they changed their mind about it. Just like every other prototype system. I believe they did this so that the games would be cheaper than the 360's and PS3's.

i'm uncertain in the event that they're going to enhance the equipment or no longer yet while they did they might better than in all likelihood merely sell an adapter or upload on for the older structures to lead them to play them too.
