In the Northern hemisphere water spins to the right when draining (in a sink or toilet for example), and the opposite way in the southern hemisphere. I've been told this is because of the earths rotation, the same reason wind does not travel in a strait line in relation to the earth. What if there was a toilet In the center of the poles, Would the water not spin at all and just get sucked in evenly, or would it randomly spin one way or the other? Thanks!

If you buy into the myth that the coriolis force influences the spin of water in a toilet bowl, then you actually have your question backward.

The north pole is in the northern hemisphere and would experience the spinning coriolis force in the same direction as other places in the northern hemisphere. Similarly at the south pole, the spin direction would be the same as the southern hemisphere. The coriolis force is actually the *strongest* at the poles.

I think what you want to ask is what would happen at the *equator*. Near the equator the coriolis force is weakest with it being zero at the equator.

This explains why tropical storms and cyclones and anticyclones don't cross the equator from one hemisphere to the other. The spinning coriolis force is zero at the equator, so the storm would just peter out rather than crossing the equator.

So I'd ask someone to check out the toilet flushing in Ecuador or other countries on the equator... see if it just flows out without spinning.

Hi. The force which influences weather patterns and air movement does not exist at the poles. The center of rotation passes through the bowl's own center line. At the North pole the toilet would turn 1 revolution in 24 hours counterclockwise. This is not a lot of motion but, all things being equal, the water would tend to flow at increasing speed (conservation of angular momentum) in a counter clockwise direction.

There are lot of persons interior the international who choose to take a chew of advice and enable their ideas run away with it. First this element with regard to the international ending in DEC 2012. do no longer enable those dooms dayers scare you. the international won't lead to DEC 2012. They took this element they chanced on on the Mayan callender and grew to become it into somthing undesirable. What the Mayans and different close by american believe (i recognize i'm one among them) is that the earth is going by using levels. All this callender is saying is that in the time of 2012 the earth will enter a distinctive section. this would not advise the international is ending. The earth has entered hundreds of levels in its historic previous and the earth remains right here. Now with regard to the pole shifts. it rather is honestly actual. The poles shift approximately each and every 2 hundred,000 years. we are actual due for one now. as quickly as returned, this would not advise the international will end. The pole shifts natually in view it rather is the earth's way of rejuvenating its electro-magnetic field. it rather is extremely significant for lifestyles on earth. The pole shift is a steady technique. it quite is by no potential like those doomsday video clips. while the poles shift, what's going to occurred is that the electromagnetic field would be weeker, yet no longer long previous. this implies specific there will be strengthen solar radiation on earth and a few climate adjustments, yet this by potential of no potential, potential that guy type will die off. And finally specific, in some unspecified time interior the destiny the solar will swallow up the earth, yet do no longer hassle approximately that through fact you and that i visit the two be ineffective, and mankind might have in all likelihood populated another planet by potential of then. we are speaking hundreds of thousands and hundreds of thousands of years. do no longer enable those human beings scare you.

The coriolis effect does not work on small systems like bath tubs and toilet bowls - this is a common misconception. So your question is moot.

Without the magnetic pull the water would not spin, or spin in the direction it leans toward.

It would be random. Only large masses like storm clouds are subject to the Coriolis effect.

It would not rotate. The water would just flow through the hole or the drain.
