Einstein had one younger sister named 'Maja' who married Einstein's Professor's (Jost Winteler) son Paul. Maja was Einstein's closest confidant.

In 1939 Einstein's sister Maja Winteler, was forced by Mussolini's racial policies to leave Florence. She went to Princeton to join her brother while Paul moved in with his sister Anna and Michel Besso's family in Geneva. Maja and Paul never saw each other again. In 1946, after the war, they began making plans to reunite in Geneva, but Maja suffered a stroke, and thereafter remained bedridden until her death in 1951.
