Again, what meatballhead girl says is NOT accurate, and most of what the others are telling you is not really helpful. They are right about El Centro being really cheap. The problem is, that El Centro is in the Colorado Desert and is over 120 miles from San Diego!! If you don't mind living in the desert and making that commmute everyday, then go ahead. But to answer your main question, there is really not any particular place in San Diego that is A LOT cheaper than the next area. Yes, inland areas (such as El Cajon, Spring Valley, and Santee) are cheaper, but they also have higher crime rates than areas closer to the water. Chances are, if you are married and your job is taking you here, you will definitely be able to afford the "safer" coastal areas. Jobs pay much higher here than most other places in the country. But if you happen to be single and moving here, you can go to "craigslist.com" to find people that need roomates in the coastal areas or any other area of San Diego. When you room with people, you only have to pay a portion of the rent and you can save more money. Anyway, the only coastal areas that are really expensive are La Jolla and Coronado. I recommend Carlsbad, Solana Beach, Encinitas, or Pacific / Mission Beach. Also check out Mission Valley. Good luck and I hope I helped.

I know somebody who rents a 2 bedroom apartment near Paradise Valley Hospital at National City worth $700.00++.
In La Jolla, it is quite expensive, a studio type of a friend costs around $1,000 per month.
Definitely El Centro, is an hours drive from San Diego and weather isnt the same as San Diego, a 3 bedroom house is $900.00 a month. This is definitely out from your list. Like today the weather there is 60-89 degrees Fahrenheit ( vs San Diego's 57-70). But if you are really tight on budget, you can give it a second thought.

To my taste the best weather in the continenal US is about 5 to 10 miles inland. San Diego is on the whole a pretty safe place. North San Diego is in general more upscale than the areas south of city center and is worth the price differences. Prices for housing are going to be bad, but you should just grit your teeth and live with it. You'll probsbly make a bit more $ than the midwest to make up for it.

I live in Oceanside (northern most beach city in San Diego County). There are (like most cities) some really nice areas and some not so nice areas. Prices here are somewhat cheaper than the rest of San Diego...mostly because it's so far away from everything. Good Luck to you! It's awesome living here!

California real estate is generally expensive, and the San Diego area is up on that list, partially because it has one of the best climates in the world, rarely hot, no snow or ice cold, no hurricanes, tornadoes, even few big earthquakes!

For cheaper places, try going inland, rather than north up the coast. You will be able to find less expensive places out in the desert areas. The farther away from the city, the cheaper, usually.

While I detect that you are a white immigrant currently in Chicago
(with some prejudice) you can find identical weather and safe
environment at much less cost - in American communities in
nearby Rosartio Beach, Baja California.
The reason that the eastern desert area is so much less,
is that the temperature is usually 120 degrees.

You are talking about a little place and use the word expansive. Do you mean small or expensive as in price?
