Hey, ignore what that "meatballhead" girl said, because she is "way off". In fact she sounds like an elementary-aged school girl, so disregard that fictitious crap that she said. Now let me tell you how San Diego "really" is. For one thing, we are not all rich. Only a small percentage of us are. It may seem like we are because of the real estate prices, but we are not. Anyway, life here besides what you mentioned is pretty good. Pollution is not a big issue here. We are all very laid-back and pretty friendly. The people are much better drivers than people in LA. The traffic is not all that bad (even during rush hour). The ocean water is very pristine and clean (except after a rainstorm; which only happens maybe 10 times in a given year). Also, the recreational opportunities are endless. What's really cool about living in San Diego is that you can go to the beach (i.e. to surf), the mountains (i.e. to ski), and the desert all in the same day!! So if you want to move here, I recommend it! You will not regret it!

There is crime in SD... it all depends on what kind and what you call at "lot." In certain areas there are shootings all the time. There tend to be rapes in the college and beach areas. Smaller crimes, like car break-ins happen all over. Overall, it's probably safer than many cities, but it's all here. There has been a rash of bank hold-ups lately, too.

Apart from the things you list, it's a pretty laid back place to live. A little too laid back, if you ask me, bordering on apathetic. Some people are more obsessed with looking good than anything else. There are some great people, though, and a vast variety of things to do.

i recently moved out of san diego - i wanted to, but i didn't go to where i wanted to go... i digress

as for crime; we got more of drugs, drunk in public, & litter than anything else it seemed like. of course there were other crimes as well. no matter where i lived in sd (i lived in chula vista most of my life but i also lived in san ysidro & rancho bernardo) i always felt safe enough to hang out in my front yard at night - by the same token i also always locked my doors.

the weather is not always nice - sit outside durring winter at night and you're below the 50's often (depending on where in SD you are - keep in mind the weather on the news even does a micro-climate because it changes so much depending on where you are).

otherwise - i left because i couldn't stand people anymore. it's crowded, people in most of the northern places are rude. just about everyone in a car is rude. i just got tired of it. i relaxed a lot when i left, my husband is thrilled i'm not as mean as i was when we lived there - a lot of my attitude had to do with what i delt with on a daily basis.

another thing to remember is that the average commute for work/home is around 30 miles - which could mean 2 hours depending on which way you are going in traffic & what time of the day you leave. when i lived there and would be in the chula vista area if i had not headed home to rancho bernardo by 3 pm, i wouldn't leave until close to 7pm to steer clear of the majority of the traffic.

of course, i may be a bit bitter in my perspective, so take that into account when you read this.

San Diego is a beautiful city - the landscape is great, beaches are great. It isn't very diverse though if you are in the main part or northern part of SD. There are a lot of very privileged people there who think that anything that isn't prada is ghetto.

there's crime anywhere....but we were rated #4 in a recent crime survey of big cities...that's on the good end. Safer than a lot of places...but dont walk down a dark alley drunk at night with a lot of money....
