Lit usually means "got onto," so it just means he was startled so much that he jumped into the middle of the room, maybe as an instinct to avoid whatever could be on the perimeter of the room. The "idiom" seems to be 19th century classic literature.

It means:
I was so surprised that I sat down in the middle of the floor.
