You can physically leave your past behind. I have done it. Harder though is to mentally leave your past behind as our experiences are one thing that shapes us into how we view the world now.

You can only leave the past in an amnesia case , other wise you will remember spikes of memorable events that has happened to you , some people will have a very good recollection some others very poor, each one has a variable depending happy or painful times . It is possible not to think about the past and is recommended to recollect events for specific reasons on your daily life . The action of living in the past , be it happy times or wishing one has chosen a different pass in a painful situation , damages the existence of the present moment , which is the only time you ever going to be alive . The past doesnt exist any more ,but the experiences that one has collected is all learned and can be useful and should be left like that.

I wouldn't say it is a myth but I don't think everybody has the ability. There are alot of things that may influence this. For instance, some people are very easy going so their reaction to trauma will not be as severe. Since bad experiences more often leave an impression than good, would you think that the impression may not be as deep for people who are more tolerant of adversity.

Ask anyone who woke up one day with amnesia and they will tell you how much they wish they could remember their past. In a literal sense, you leave the past behind you in each micro sliver of each passing moment of time, like a rabbit that hops around the rug leaving behind little balls of poo. The rabbit can't put the poo back in and there is nothing anyone can do about it without hurting the rabbit, it just keeps happening. In a figurative sense, leaving the past behind can have a different meaning to each individual aware of the time that passes them by. In referance to time, can you say that if everything stopped would time still continue?

Your patter is a bit pretentious. On a realistic level, America is great because you can literally leave your past behind and start over any number of times.

You always remember unless it was an extremely traumatic occasion... for example many victims of severe burns or amputees forget the intense pain they experienced. However, merely unpleasant memories stick... No matter how hard I try to forget mine.

the past is what makes you who you are, so you shouldn't leave it but confront it or deal with it good or bad.
