This is simply my opinion, not fact:

Most American athletes are not really encouraged to excel in school. In fact, they are often not even expected to do an average level of work.

Additionally, they usually automatically fit in with the other athletes in school, and therefore have a ready-made group of friends.

My point is, when you are an athlete, you have a group of popular friends, and you are not expected to do well in school, why would you? Your average person is not born with a need to (or love of) learning, it is instilled in them either by their parents/teachers or they do it to make friends (i.e. other kids who are in a similar situation). Even if you are a highly intelligent person, your mind will not grow unless you work it (especially at an early age).

All that said, my hypothesis is that your average athlete is not a particularly intelligent person because they were raised in the situation I described above.

DISCLAIMER: Yes, there are very intelligent professional athletes; I was just giving my opinion about the majority of them.

P.S. When you ask a question like that, make sure you spell "athlete" correctly.
