use quadratic formula

(-2+square root of(4-4(2)(-8) ) divided by 4
or (-2-square root of(4-4(2)(-8) ) divided by 4
=
(-2+square root of 68 ) divided by 4
(-2-square root of 68 ) divided by 4

take out a factor of 2 to simplify

x^2 + x - 4 = 0

(x-2)(x+2)=0

x-2=0 x=2

x+2=0 x=-2
