Answer: Yes I would be able tell the difference between dog and human DNA, but I am not the average person. I have access to equipment to analyze the DNA. Of course, it depends on how much DNA I have to work with. If it is a very small strand of DNA that does not code for anything, then probably not. If i had a whole chromosome or the entire genome, then yes.

Answer: No average person would be able to tell the difference. A strand of human DNA would be only one chromosome. The only way anyone would be able to tell the difference, was through the use of PCR amplifcation using oligonucleotides specific to human and canine DNA respectively and then running the results on a DNA electrophoresis gel. No average person would have access to that equipment. I personally wouldn't be able to tell the difference until I got that equipment in my hands.
