I know that my sister was in Louisiana and thought she saw an ugle cat while out jogging one day and was later told it was a nutria rat. I have heard that they are fed to alligators. If you go on the link from this source you can find a picture of one on the internet. Good luck!

It is a southern rodent that looks very similar to a capybara. I live in New Orleans so I know that they eat away at the coastal marshes, so many people are gung-hoe for killing them (esp. because there are so many). Oh, and it is spelled nutria.
