If I don't have the time to wait, in a quick pinch in the past I have come back to the local area where the fruit flies were and sprayed them with a quick shot of hairspray. As the hairspray dries, their wings freeze up and they fall to the counter/floor. Then I just wipe them up with a paper towel. You can spray them in the air or on the counter etc. A quick save if you have company coming over! Hairspray is less toxic than bug sprays if you have kids/pets as well.

Get a pice of paper then get a double sided tape sticky type.
Hang the paper up with little string and Thumb tack.
This is similar what Dept. of Ag. uses when they need to catch insects in traps for id purposes. Then the othe possible idea is get a can of common insect flying repelent if you not afraid of after smell that may linger in room.
The other possiblity is get one of the indoor fogger cans at local
Hardware or Home Inprovement Center. Then when you and your family will be gone for two-three hrs. Follow the instruction on label normally most of them say place can on newspaper and set-off canister. Make sure you read and Follow instruction how this will work for you. Good Luck:

i took an old gatorade bottle, put just a little grape juice in it, and made a funnel out of a postcard sized piece of paper, making the small part very small and the big part very big. put the funnel into the top of the bottle. the flies will go down in the funnel but cannot find their way out. the funnel must fit snuggly. you wont get them all but most of them that way, also try to eliminate any other fruit out in the open in the house for a while

place a bowl of water on the counter add vinegar, sugar and a few drops of dishsoap and leave it for a day or two. The fruit flies will go in there and die.

take a big plastic bag, like the ones you get from the produce section, put a piece of cut fruit in it (bananas or apples work best), and stand the bag up as best you can.... let it sit overnight, and in the morning, close it up and immediately take it outside to throw it away... most of the remaining fruit flies should be trapped in the bag

They only live for 24 hours, so make sure you have no fruit laying around, and they'll be gone by tomorrow night.
