I personally prefer the classic black and orange as Halloween colors. Purple is often seen as being mystical and supernatural. I actually really hate the color purple, so I just avoid buying any purple decorations and stick to my black and orange.

Yes, largely because of Harry Potter. Since I bought a witch's broom with purple and black at Walmart to attend the 4th game of the NLCS when the Rockies swept the Diamondbacks in 2007, I've noticed and wondered why Purple has become the new Orange for Halloween marketing. I've become convinced it is being marketed to kids because of its importance in Harry Potter movie -- Professor Q wears a purple turban, the knight bus is purple and Tonk's hair is purple, and Harry Potter is on record as saying purple is the most mystical of all colors....So, the emergence of the Color Purple in Halloween can be tied directly to Harry Potter movies...

I wouldn't say purple has replaced the black - it's just been added to the Halloween color scheme, along with yellow & green. Those colors have come to represent this particular holiday now; they're very festive & all go well together, I think. I love to see houses with the purple lights on them - they look kinda eerie!!
