when I take off it souds fine but about 2nd gear it sounds like there is a slight clog in the exhaust. In neutral, when I rev it up it sounds fine. What could this be? Maybe the catalytic converter?

The shift pattern of the chevy trannys is weird. My '04 Silver with the 5.3 does this. It shifts out of 1st right away, and 2nd bogs a bit before the RPMs come up. Perhaps a reprogramming chip would help.

Does your truck have the tow/haul mode button? That tells the computer that you're towing, so it keeps the tranny in 1st gear longer. Drive it around in Tow/Haul mode and see if that solves the problem. The normal mode is conservative, for better gas mileage.

there's a hybrid variety, so as that could have the main suitable mileage. My truck (group cab LS 2002 Silverado 2500HD) gets 12 mpg on the streets, 10 while pulling my boat, and eight while pulling my trailer...

Take it to a Muffler Shop and have them gut out the Catalytic Converter. They will run a straight pipe though it. People wouldn't even know it's been done.

i own a repair shop, and its possible you might have to re-adjust the timing on it,it sounds like its retarding its self wile under a strain, that's why you getting the strange sound,or loss of power on it,id check it anyway ,we put a dual exhaust on one a while back and it did this too it seems the engine was breathing better and needed a boost in the timing, and after we timed it,it did real good,i hope this help,s.good luck with it.

Sounds like your converter or muffler is breaking down inside and blocking flow as your drive.

Could be as simple as a restricted fuel filter,or cat converter on one bank broke apart inside. should hear a rattling sound if it has.
