I want to transcend the stereotype of the angry feminist and make a useful contribution. How can I accomplish this? Are there any good books/articles or magazines to give me some perspective?

There is a book called "Who Cooked The Last Supper?" by Rosalind Miles. By the way she writes, you can tell she is angry at the place women have in our history (in other words, no place), but she handles it with humour and wit - and some of her theories on "what might have happened" regarding evolution, societal structure, etc. actually allowed me to disagree with her in some ways - and therefore opened my mind in realizing how my angry rants were coming off to everyone, especially men!

From a guys point of view ...

You need not be angry. You are not alone! There are a great many "normal" guys who can understand your situation. Most women can as well.

My 13 year old daughter is experiencing the same thing!

Yeah, there are some folk who still haven't learned what life is all about. We are ALL human and should be treated equally! Both men and women!

Your desire to transcend identifys you as someone special, a thinker! You are someone who can lead others and that is where your future lies, IMHO.

Continue to be yourself and to fight (legally) for your thoughts and desires. Take a side and seek others to follow you. But, not just women! Find men who support you as well!

If you are strong in your opinion, you will go far for the rights of others!

You have the support of many Sasquatch!

Stay well and live long.

A males point of view on a feminist question...Don't hit me!! Or throw things...I want to help. Anger is a natural emotion, although it tends to cause some of us problems. I have wrestled with that demon for years. I just about have him whooped. To be useful...be a contribution....It is my opinion that ANYONE who angers you with no sense of helping you cool off...is a waste of your time. To remain angry is a stress that causes damage not only to your hearts rythm..(0-60 in 1 second), but to your mind as well. Be patient, be calm..and don't be hateful. As I said..I almost have it whooped. Good Luck to you and My prayers for all the anger stricken in the world at this moment.

Most feminists I know aren't angry. If you went up to them and told them they should be barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen you'd get some anger, but most that I know converse on topics in a rational manner. Just learn to talk about things that are important to you calmly and rationally. Also realize that not all guys are horrible people. There are jerks, but there are also really nice guys.

Steps to not being an angry feminist:

1) Learn to control, (not deny) your emotions. Feminists often make decisions based on pass trauma. These emotions, (such as rage) often hinder their judgment.

2) Learn to differentiate between legal and 'perspective oppressions. Legal oppressions consists of rights being denied to those they are do. 'Perspective' oppressions are just situations that one 'sees' as an oppression, but is legally sound.

Examples:

[Legal Oppression] Any one being denied the right to vote, own property, and life.

[Perspective Oppression] Society not viewing women as leaders.

Choose your battles. People who flip out over every little thing (like the spelling of "woman") are the people who seem a little off. Work on important things, like equal pay and educating young people to respect everybody. I know you're asking for resources and not advice, but that's my perspective on it.

Understand that men are 'success' objects just as women are 'sex' objects.

Society shapes the male role just as it does the female role.
