Can I talk to other people who use AIM and IMem?

I want to talk to my friends on IM but they use AIM, and I really would like to talk to them without resorting to downloading AIM.

You can go to http://www.e-buddy.com and use an online version of several different messengers for free as long as you have an account set up with in your case here, AIM. No downloading required and it's free.
