First off, I speak English. But when I went to renew my driver's license with the State, they had both Spanish and English written tests. How can you read English signs, warnings and other important stuff on the road if you don't know English?

Anyone can memorize shapes and colors. What about the increasing # of cities using electronic signs to update traffic with info. and warnings.

Its my opinion that YOU SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED TO.
But my opinion apparently does not mean much. I work as a service writer for a Detroit Diesel/Mercedes Benz dealer, and it AMAZES me how many drivers we get in our shop that speak little or no english. And they are hurling 80,000 lbs down the road at 70 or 80 MPH and cant read the road signs.

lol yes they are allowed to legally drive without having knowledge of the English language. Not only do DMV offices allow them to take the written test and the driving test but not only Spanish is offered in testing languages. Here in CA you can ask for, Spanish, Mein, Hmong, Korean, Japanese, probably any language you prefer. Doesn't make sense if they can't read the laws how can they follow the laws when all traffic signs are posted in English. Ahhhh America the Land of Milk and Honey

English has nothing to do with driving. License is the requirement to drive and not English. Traffic signs are easy to understand even without knowing English.

Unfortunately, as any police officer will tell you, non-English speaking people can not only get a drivers' license, but worse, they can get a CDL and drive an 18-wheeler !
How do they read the manual, the test questions and pass the drivers' exam? Who knows?
We should all thank our local liberal for this little dance with insanity.

Yes, you can... *siiigh*... all you have to be able to do is RECOGNIZE the signs (which is why a lot of them are becoming pictures now). So, you can even have an oral examination where there's an instructor who speaks to you in your native language. Sheesh... just because you can't speak English doesn't mean you can't drive or understand the rules.

Not only that, but YOU can get an international driver's license if YOU go to another country and rent a car!
Shouldn't they make YOU show a mastery of the local language first?

yes u can have a license and not speak english i guess who ever is driving will get a hint of what the signs say if not then i am sure they have a passenger that does lol

Of course you can drive without speaking English!! Of course!
That's why most signs are just pictures, and the signs are pretty universal (eight-sided, red sign = "stop" all around the world).
There are probably thousands and thousands of non-English speakers driving in this country, and I personally know dozens of them because I work with refugees.
What an ignorant question!

Welcome to the politically correct US. Just be careful asking these types of questions, you may be accused of a hate crime.
In California it is very hard to even find a drivers instruction manual in english at the DMV but they have every other language out on the table.

Yes.. Everybody knows what a red diamond shaped sign with the word "STOP" on it means, except for those English speaking people that are always getting tickets for running stop signs, and like Laura Bush who killed her ex BF by running one.
