Start going through one room at a time. Pick up an object and if you have not used it in one year get rid of it to friends, charitys.... I know this is hard to do but I had to do it after we moved from a large place to downsize a small place...and now I know I did someone else good with the things I donated like all my decorations from Easter Bunnies to Christmas stuff and every holiday and now I get to see them anyhow with a bunch of children enjoying them. It makes me have a good gut feeling inside to know they are being enjoyed.....

Clean where you are. clean your bathroom while you are getting the children bathed. Put a load of laundry in right after you bathe the children/self in the evening, another load first thing every morning. Clean the bathroom before leaving it. Wipe the washer and dryer, clean up the lint and trash from the laundry room while there.
Clean the kitchen as you cook. Every woman needs an apron with large pockets across the front and a clip on the side for a cleaning cloth. Organize these pockets for different parts of the house. Then pick-up and deposit clutter in the appropriate pocket. When you find yourself in those different areas, put the picked-up objects where they belong. Clean the smudges and dust wherever you are. It will save many steps.

Just pretend your are going to move to a small place, what would be the most important things to you. GEt rid of everything else. How would you pack everything you have. Would you be able to make an inventory of everything you own? You may just have too much stuff.
So after you get rid of all the stuff that you keep hanging around that you never even liked but somebody gave it to you, you will have more space to enjoy the peace and tranquility. Less dusting too.
Then get a schedule for cleaning and stick yo it.

Since it's hard to get rid of clothes because I think I will use them again, instead of throwing away right away I put them in a box and keep on a shelf in the closet. Then in six months if I haven't missed them I give the box away. Do not look in the box or you will want to keep them.

I like the tip that suggests you set a timer for 15 minutes and clean up one room as much as you can...then move to another room. It should save time...and no one's home is spotless if they really live there!

Some good advice above. Toss/sell what you haven't touched or used in over a year. Tough to do, but it needs to be done.
Now I need to do the same.
