researchers do not believe the whales are intending to commit suicide. It is beginning to appear they either get disoriented which could be caused by (a) or (b) or they are attempting to escape something in the water that is causing them distress. Whenever whales are helped back into the water they don't rebeach themselves in the majority of cases which tends to dispel the "suicide" mentality.

as a marine biologist I find that whales can commit these acts for many of the same reasons humans do.....emotional distress and or specifically if a child has been lost or a mate turns an individual down

I believe they do commit suicide. Some scientists said because of polution, some said because when one gets sick it fears the idea of disease spread. Some said depression. I believe that animals got a lot in their minds which we will never discover. They are so peaceful and silent.

When the water is crystal clear and the sun is especially bright the conditions are good for the surrounding water to be reflective to a mirror like consistency. This allows the whale to get a really good look at themselves and it can have devastating effects on there self image.
