Many states like Oregon where I live have what is called an open carry law which means you can legally carry a handgun if it is in plain view. The problem is that cops will constantly hassle you if you do so I just carry concealed. Visit packing.org for info for all states. http://www.packing.org/

if you are a felon, you cannot. its much safer to carry an unconcealed rifle/shotgun. if you carry a handgun, you must have a permit to own it, and it must stay in clear visibility of everyone you contact i.e. strapped outside your pants on your thigh, or in an inaccessible place in your car i.e. a LOCKED glovebox. the cops usually give you a three move minimum for access to a handgun, reaching to the glovebox, unlocking the glovebox, opening the glovebox, for it to be not considered concealed. in other words, if you are caught with a gun under your seat, it will be considered concealed

That depend on the state in which you live. In some it is legal to carry a handgun and it can be concealed if you have a permit.
Check you state laws.

I'm fairly sure that you cannot carry a non concealed weapon into most public places. You could transport it, but not carry it visably in a mall or anything.
