I am a stay at home mother and a school teacher by training. I am a hard worker, and I need a retail job for the holiday season. I have never worked in retail before. What advice can you share about applying for this kind of job? Who has the best training? Which stores offer employees the best discounts? What kind of pay can I reasonably expect? I don't even know how much to ask for!

Thanks!

Jen

I work for Wal-Mart, my ex-husband works for Target. Both get like a 10% discount. As far as pay goes, it's like any other job. Put down what you'd like to start at and negotiate from there. Alot will also depend on what area you live in. Both start at more than minimum wage. The mall would be a good place too.

In my experience in working retail they offer you a set amount. The best places to work are the big chain stores. Wal-Mart, Target, Macy's, JC Penney's, Sears, Marshall's, etc. It's not that hard depending on what you will be doing. Most places hire to work the cash register and sales floor. Wal-Mart and Target have the best training programs. The majority of the stores offer discounts of 10%. Rairly will you find anything higher I think Marshall's is 15% or 20%. The pay will range from $7.50-$9.00 an hour. Don't bother asking for what you want to get paid. Your seasonal they pay you starting out salary which is the bottom of the list.

Do you know anything about jewelery?? If so I would defiantely say a jewelery store such as Kay Jewelers or others found in the mall. They pay hourly and hire seasonal workers. The best part....they receive commission. Wait i lied, that isn' t the best part.....the best part is being able to try on all that gorgeous jewelery to you know, show the customers how absolutely stunning it is!

Happy job hunting :)

Target is an excellent seasonal place to work and they are currently hiring for thier seasonal people, It is a fun and friendly place to work, and they treat you really well. I would recommend it over any other retail chain.

Why don't you try the post office? They usually hire seasonal help for the Christmas season.
