density is useful in identifying minerals--different minerals have different densities, and knowing the density of a material can narrow the choice.

Density is the ratio of the mass to the volume. This derived value can be used to compare known densities of pure substances with presumed adulturated substances.

Since both mass and volume are easy to measure, this makes density an ideal way to identify substances.

Most high school chemistry classes have a density lab as one of their first labs.
