Patriotism denotes positive and supportive attitudes to a 'fatherland' (Latin patria), by individuals and groups. The 'fatherland' can be a region or a city, but patriotism usually applies to a nation and/or a nation-state. Patriotism covers such attitudes as: pride in its achievements and culture, the desire to preserve its character and the basis of the culture, and identification with other members of the nation. Patriotism is closely associated with nationalism, and is often used as a synonym for it. Strictly speaking, nationalism is an ideology - but it often promotes patriotic attitudes as desirable and appropriate. (Both nationalist political movements, and patriotic expression, may be negative towards other people's 'fatherland').

A patriot is one who feels and shows respect for the history, heritage and people of his country. Patriotism does not vascillate with the times or with the events of the moment, it is a constant within the emotional framework of a citizen of any country. It is a feeling of unity with others with whom one shares history, experiences and expectations.
People can experience "patriotism" for their neighborhood, their school, their hometown, their workplace or any environment where they have shared good and bad experiences with others, and have bonded with those others due to these shared experiences.

I would say that patriotism means standing behind your government without questioning it, fighting for your country when necessary, always considering the Constitution and Bill of Rights when making decisions, voting, etc.
During some administrations, the above has been very hard to stand behind--very many administrations, unfortunately.

It means standing up and placing my right hand over my heart, when the flag goes by, and standing up for my country.
If crooks are in control of my country, then just as we did in the Revolutionary war, a real Patriot will chase the crooks out.

patriotism to me means loving my country (by country i mean the whole country-the american people), being willing to sacrifice whatever is necessary to protect and defend the country, to look for peaceful ways to make things even better, and having the integrity and courage to stand up and tell my government "NO" when i think it is wrong...when i think of america, i don't think of our government...i think of our people and our potential...i'm the first to thank God that He placed me in this country out of all the others...and i hope to be able to say when my life is over that in some small way, i helped to preserve and improve it just a little

Believing in the values and attitudes that have made this nation more powerful and wealthy than any other in the history of mankind.
Also understanding that things might not be perfect, but we can work to change whatever is wrong, and make better decisions in the future.
