Do people in the South still have any hard feelings against the Union for the Civil War and Reconstruction, or are they immaterial when compared to their patriotism for the USA?

Was there a general time period when Southern animosity to the Union began to wane under renewed patriotism from the United States? Spanish-American War, WWI?

Any thoughts?

I am from Tenn. and to be honest we are now more about the usa instead of north and south but there are still hard feeling for some who will not trust northerners or Yankees as we call them. I think that the civil war was a very traumatic and devastating experience for the southj and there will be some animosity still.

I absolutely detest being called a Yankee.

The Yankees razed cities and farms in my native Georgia, just to demoralize Confederate soldiers. The soldiers they faced after the Battles for Atlanta, were cadets (boys ranging from 9 to 16), and retired, elderly men, not the regular CS Army which had fallen back to regroup, elsewhere. It was a blood bath, and the southern forces were given no quarter, during General Sherman's "March To The Sea." A one mile wide path was burned across the state, and no homestead was spared from it.

I have an idea of how people in other places feel about being occupied, but, I am an American. I will stand by my nation, and my state. My patriotism is great, but it is tempered with compassion for those who we face.

I'm from a southern family, I don't think it really matters that an army led by a totalitarian Republican, who took away peoples civil liberties, and forced the Irish to fight for the North to become Citizens. And also increased the size of Government to the nth power at that time in history.

To Hell with the idea of the Union. What Happened to the United States of America. States that make their own decisions, who are united through a Constitution but not a Centralized Government.

But I'm kind of retro in my thinking.

I'm from VA. Every male in my family has served in the armed forces, that I am aware of, since the War against Northern Aggression. My grandmother hand 9 brothers which all served during WW II at the same time. I was brought up to believe that as an American I OWED my country, the men who died preserving the values, moral, and convictions of this great nation a debt of gratitude, and a small sacrifice of a few years military service. I served 3 years in the Army as did my brother, following in the footsteps of our male descendants. Maybe it's just here in the Bible belt of southwestern VA but I was taught it was all of us, south, north, east, and west. But if the south does rise again I fear the rest of you are in trouble because I don't think the you all see it that way. I'd be happy if you proved me wrong. Vote Republican in 2006. It's a vote for patriotism, ethics, strong moral values, and the unity of America.

It depends on whom you ask. Different races (blacks) and how they may have been affected then may hold a grudge if the subject is discussed. I don't believe it affected the over-all patriotism of these people regarding the U.S.A. I personally don't think animosity waned regarding any of the periods you mentioned, but a history professor, because they have studied these periods in-depth, can enlighten you.
