on a tennis racquet...why do the mains tend to move out of place easier then the crosses? I seem to almost never touch the crosses...its the mains that I have to adjust sometimes between points.. why is that?

because when you hit topspin, it only moves the mains because you brush up on the ball and it changes, crosses dont change much because they are strung going the same way you hit.

It is because the mains string is longer then the crosses string. The longer strings have the Softer effect on the stringbed. The shorter strings have the stiffer effect on the stringbed. So the longer strings move out of the place easier then the shorter strings. And therefore the mains move easier then crosses.

HI! Your question stood out to me because a very similar thing happened to me, My husband got a new job in my last month of pregnancy with my son and we had to move when my son was only 5 wks old, all the way from Canada to NewYork in the united states. It was a looong ride there, but actually to encourage you traveling with a newborn is actually the BEST time to travel with a baby because they sleep most of the day away! an older baby would be more difficult to travel with because they are more fussy wanting to crawl around and move and eat food, but a newborn just needs to be nursed (or bottle fed) burped and changed and you can put them right back in the carseat. The only thing that will take you a bit longer is that they need to eat every 3 to 4 hours at that age and you will have to be making more frequent stops because you can't feed them in the carseat properly. Anyways, you CAN do it! You just have to know ahead of time that it may take a little longer then it normally would with an older baby.

Your first answer was great. I voted for it. Seriously, I was going to say the same thing. Because when I hit a lot of top spin, I will adjust my strings too, I can break like five strings in one shot if I hit a lot of topspin for awhile. : )

the racket is supposed to be parallel to the court on impact if you hit topspin,so those strings move.
but they are also longer than cross strings and their tension is spread over a bigger area so they are almost "looser" than cross strings.
Oversize racket strings move more than mid plus size or smaller racket head sizes because of longer strings...

"Use the force Luke", but remember the force will move your mains when your stiffness decreases, so just hire someone to restring your racquet after every game like the pros.

You generate spin from your main strings.
