One of the main difference between afro americans and afro latinos seems to be the way we define our blackness. Though there are many black latinos who we share a bond with, some dont seem to want to claim black roots. They want to claim latino extend which isnt a race. Admixture has a lot to do with our experiences in the Americas. And neither one of our people are 100% black. But how is having spanish & indian blood an excuse for them? Especially with us afro americans though carrying some blood of nonblacks have never negated our claim of blackness. I am the average african american, predominately african decent with a couple additions. My father and his kin are of immediate mixed black and indian blood. Their indian blood comes from the lakota people though many confuse us for cherokee which is annoying to me. They also have Asian blood since their people migrated from there. But I am black and proud, never claiming anything unless asked otherwise. Why dont latinos feel this way?

Because in Latin America, having one drop of black blood does not make you black, it makes you mulatto.

In the US if a person is 7/8's white and 1/8 black, they are called 'african-american'. That's rather pathetic and racist.

That said, there is tons of racism in Latin America, and more socially 'institutionalized' than in the US.

Latinos however are not a biological race no more than 'Anglos' are a race. There can be full black latinos, full indian native latinos, mestizos, mulattos, asian latinos, and white blond latinos.

I've notice that too, I have seen some black desent latinos people like that.
It really anoys me cause it's like they are ashamed of being mostly black, & they think they're better than us cause they come from latin america.

I think it's ok that they go by latino, but I think the should make it know that they are a black latino, or afro latino.

Great question, esp when it's sooo obvious that many latinos have black blood. I actually had one puerto rican fellow say that to me, "I know I have African blood in me, but..."

He looked like a regular black dude, with an accent.

Becuase that's what they are. i believe your race is your culture, not your blood.
for example: of family of European descent lives in the dominican republic and has for generations and generations. they are predominantly European but have a little dash of Indian, and african in there. what are they?:
they are Dominican
