What you have is called Trichotillomania (Trick-o-till-o-mania) I am 27 am have been pulling since I was 13. So I know what you are going through. Seeing a shrink has not been helpful to me either. But I have taken part in the organization that has been started by hair-pullers called Trichotillomania Learning Center (www.TLC.org). They have conferences yearly and seminars around the country to help those battling this. Its really helpful and comforting to know you are not alone. Look it up. They have books and videos for sale on their website. Also visit www.stoppulling.com Its really helpful if you want to work on stopping. It helps you learn the times you are most likely to pull and sort of teaches you good behavioral strategies. I play with silly putty or a kneaded eraser alot, and that helps. But being mindful and working on strenthening my will will only help me stop. Good Luck....and dont be ashamed. Just forget about what everyone else thinks. That stress just causes things to worsen.

This is a stress problem. A regular Dr. would be able to help you (with a medication) you don't have to necessarily see a shrink. Try to focus outside yourself and really stay in the MOMENT when you feel the urge to pull your hair. Everyone get's nervous and it's OK. People your around might look calm but you can bet many of them are just as nervous as you! There is absolutely NOTHING to be ashamed of.

Like many people asking questions, you don't give enough information. How old are you. Male? Female? This is typically a female problem.
If you don't talk to a professional about this situation or find another outlet for your frustration/nervousness, you will probably continue to do this activity.
Unless you want to pursue the career of a Buddhist monk or other bald pursuit, find ways to release your self immediately. Other addictive behavior could be worse.
One thing to try when nervous is to excuse yourself to a place where you can be alone. Sit comfortably and focus on your breathing. Count to seven as you inhale through your nose. Hold the breath at the top of the inhalation. Then, slowly, again to the count of seven exhale through the mouth with a soft blowing motion. Slowly pay attention to the breath, the rising and falling of your chest and imagine yourself calm and quiet. Sit for at least five minutes. You may get into the habit of doing this regularly and sit for as long as twenty minutes. Time yourself. Be well.
good luck.

try doing something less self-destructive. deep breaths, hum a song.
how old are you? if you are an adult you may need to see a counselor, whether you are ashamed or not.
otherwise, 23 days is the standard length of time to break a habit. i can never keep my nails out of my mouth for more than 13. good luck, and may you be stronger than i am.

have you ever heard of a "tangela" It's found in wal*mart. lol. It doesn't do anything, but it's good to fiddle with. I used to do the same thing, but that accually helps. it fits in my pocket, and i can just pull it out and start fiddleing with it when i'm nervous.

Only you'll know how to help yourself.
It is like smoking . We know it is bad for us but we still do it until one day we say "enough!" and stop. Depends on you...
