This may be so far off, but when I saw your question I thought of friends, people you can count on. They are so important as life matures. Is that at all what you had in mind? Strange, huh?

I think buffers are important because they allow certain chemical reactions to be occur that wouldn't normally occur, and sometimes those reactions can be used in favor of life.

On the other hand, having a buffered reaction environment discourages some reactions that easily occur ( and are detrimental). This can also be advantageous to life.

Thanks for your provocative question. Keep the good Karma going!
