Would like it to look nice, but making it gas-tight is most important. The plastic cap is also cracked.

Any ideas?

Would really recommend that you just replace it.
With as much jostling as a dirt bike gets, it may be hard for a repair of any size to stick.
Replacing on most bikes is just two or three connections to loosen and refasten.

You may have to find another cap. There is a product called Red Coat( spelling could be different), that will coat the inside of the tank and fix small holes. This stuff is strong, when put on a paper towel and let dry it is very strong and flexible. I found this product and ones similar at radiator shops, or they will probably be able to steer you in the right direction.

If the plastic is as bad as explained I would think it has ended it's useful life.
Most plastic becomes very brittle from sun exposure and I doubt it would accept any coating that would not leak
Maybe someone else knows a way

Try heating up a butter knife and dragging some of the heated-up plastic to cover the cracks. Fill tank with water first.

Don't start out on a 2 stroke unless you plan to race MX. If so an 85 from any of the manufacturers you mentioned or a Honda CRF150R would be great. If you don't plan to race I agree that the CRF150F would be an excellent choice.

Your local cycle shop should have a liquid liner that should withstand gasoline. That or e-bay for a used one, or check a cycle salvage yard. Also don't forget about hot rod shops, they may have a real good product

Fiber glass, or plasticdip (which you can buy at lowes, or anything like that). Or you could just replace it.
