Honey, if you have only been having your period for a year you are very lucky you have been regular so far. What you are experiencing is completely normal. Don't worry. And the brown stuff is most likely blood and endometrium (tissue that lines the uterus). You shed the every month when you have your period.
Just relax. It's ok. However, if you have not had a pap or pelvic exam by a doctor yet in your life, you should. Talk to your mother (or another adult female in your life) about this and see a doctor if for no other reason, peace of mind.
I'm nearly 40 years old and I get the "brown stuff" at the end of every period. Yes it is old blood. But nothing to panic over unless it is happening for over a week.

ive been having my period for several years, and its never been very regular. its compleatly normal to occasionally skip a period, sometimes it happens from loosing or gaining a lot of weight, or if youve been really stressed, or even if youve been doing a lot of strenuois physical activity.
the brown stuff is part of the lining of your uteran wall (which is was all period 'blood' is) which can be anywhere from red to brownish red to brown.
spotting is also normal, espeially if you skipped a recent period, this is you body trying to get rid of all the stuff that it didnt get a chance to because of the missed period.
if it continues for a few months, or you have any other abnormal bleeding, make sure you see a doctor, but otherwise you sound pretty normal to me.

It could just be because you are young, and have only had your period for a year. Sometimes it does take a while for your body to become regular in how and when your cycle occurs.
But, if it does seem worrisome to you, by all means contact your Dr. It would be better to know that everything is ok, than to ignore it and it potentially be a problem.

i'm going to assume by "year ago", you mean you had your very first period a year ago, and your fairly young still. dont worry about some abnormal cycles, your hormones are trying to figure themselves out. if you did however, have any sexual contact AT ALL with a guy, then you really do need a preg test done. you never know.
