No one has made a more indelible impact on american society and pop culture than Elvis and the Beatles. Despite the great amount of fame and fortune many new "stars" have, the vast majority of them will only have their "15 minutes" of fame and then they'll simply fade away until the next "big" star comes along to replace them. Elvis and the Beatles are permanent icons that remain the "standards" by which everyone else will be judged.

I won't say Jesus because it just seems wrong to put Him in that category. So I'll go with Elvis, whether you like him or not. He's been dead a long time and his name and products still bring in millions. He's a phenomenon. Having said that, we might have ancestors who died before Elvis was born and don't know what an Elvis is!!! Within their era, they may think an opera singer from the 1800's is the greatest celebrity of all. Or Mozart. The Greatest Generation might pick Sinatra. People who thrived in the Twenties might pick Charlie Chaplin. Baby Boomers might lean towards the Beatles. But, I still say Elvis. Great question.
